Believe it or not, drinking water is one of the hardest things for me to do for myself. I just don't even think about getting myself a drink until about lunchtime. All morning I am running from one thing to to next; preparing breakfast, getting the baby dressed, making sure the kids are ready to class on zoom etc. I try to eat a quick breakfast sometime in there, and I rarely even think to drink anything with it, especially if I'm having oatmeal with almond milk in it. Then, by lunch I'm ready for an iced coffee. Honestly, as far as water, I usually only drink about 1-2 water bottles per day. So, probably 32 ounces.
Did you know the Mayo Clinic says that women should be drinking 91 ounces of water per day? WHAT?!? Now they do mention we probably get 20% of that through food...plus I put ice and water in my coffee so that counts too right? 😆 So, I think 64 ounces is probably a good amount to work toward since that is double what I am drinking now. **Now, remember you don't want to over-do it either. There is a such thing as drinking too much water. Your kidneys can only process 27-34 ounces of water per hour, so it is very important to spread out your water intake throughout the day. Listen to your body and if you feel this is too much water for you, make your goal smaller. Or, if you have a health condition that you think can be affected by water intake always consult your doctor.**
We know we need water for a variety of health reasons including staving off urinary tract infections, aiding in digestion (no one enjoys being constipated,) to help regulate our temperature, and the list goes on. There are beauty reasons as well. It makes your skin look better and brighter in addition to helping with weight loss. For a study on water intake and weight loss, read here. But, did you also know it can affect your thinking and your mood? Read here about the connections between dehydration and anxiety.
If you do not normally drink 64 ounces of water a day, take this challenge with me. Starting Monday 12th, I'm going to try to drink 64 ounces of water daily, for 3 days. (Starting small here.) I'm going to purchase a 64 ounce water bottle so I can keep track of what I am drinking and because I can buy one that has cute motivational sayings like this one. Do what works best for you!
